The parent company Northeast Grocery which operates Price Chopper and Tops Friendly Markets is considering a sale that could reach more than $1 billion when including debt according to sources familiar with the situation. The Schenectady New York-based grocery company Northeast Grocery works with UBS to determine interest from private equity firms and supermarket operators who want to acquire the business.
The company operates nearly 300 stores across six Northeastern states while producing $250 million in annual EBITDA after its 2021 merger between Price Chopper–Market 32 and Tops.
The spokesperson stated that Northeast Grocery maintains its commitment to customer value delivery while actively exploring strategic growth possibilities through mergers and acquisitions.
The Golub family established Price Chopper in 1932 while Tops began operations in 1962 before undergoing various ownership transitions until it re-emerged from bankruptcy in 2018. The 2021 merger aimed to increase market presence in the competitive grocery industry. UBS declined to comment.
