Nvidia-Backed Perplexity Launches AI Browser to Challenge Chrome

The startup Perplexity AI which received funding from Nvidia and other major tech companies released its AI-powered web browser Comet to challenge Google Chrome’s market leadership.

The new browser became available to subscribers of the Perplexity Max plan which costs $200 per month during its Wednesday launch. The browser system enables users to perform online tasks through conversational AI which provides question answers and content summaries and meeting booking and research assistance within one interface.

The new browser Comet enters a market where Chrome maintains its position as the leading browser with 68% global market dominance. The company believes its privacy features combined with productivity tools will attract both professionals and tech-oriented users who want local data storage and no user data collection for model training.

The startup gained rapid visibility through its AI transformation of internet interactions because it received funding from Jeff Bezos and SoftBank and Nvidia. The market competition between Google and Perplexity occurs during Big Tech’s rush to implement generative AI technology into fundamental products. OpenAI introduced a search tool after Google implemented AI Overviews to improve search result quality.

The company faces opposition from News Corp and Forbes and other publishers because of its unauthorized content usage practices. The company established a publisher partnership program to resolve licensing issues with content providers.
