Elon Musks social media platform X is facing investigation in Europe following complaints from nine civil rights groups accusing the company of utilizing user data for advertising, in breach of EU regulations.

Several organizations like European Digital Rights and Global Witness filed complaints with the European Commission and French regulator Arco citing the Digital Services Act (DSA). This act strictly prohibits ad targeting that relies on attributes, like race or religion.

The allegations arise from an examination of Xs Ad Repository, a transparency database mandated by the DSA. The groups argue that it uncovered advertisements, from companies utilizing what seem to be unique categories of sensitive personal information violating Article 9 of the GDPR.

The coalition expressed worry in a joint statement and urged regulators to take enforcement measures promptly; X as well, as the Commission and Arcom have not yet replied to comment requests.

The issue heightens the continuing conflicts between technology companies and European authorities who are placing greater emphasis these days in ensuring openness and privacy compliance according to the latest digital regulations in place thereabouts If deemed valid the lawsuit might result in penalties or limitations being imposed upon company Xs advertising approach, throughout the European Union.
